Which is more than 2,500 years old is one of the most ancient cities in the world. "Everythingl have heard about the beauty of Samarkand is true, except that is even more beautiful than I could have imagined" - Alexander the Great said. Registan is the main square of Samarkand, a unique architectural ensemble with three large amazing madrasahs. The Shakh-i-Zindah complex is an outstanding architectural ensemble of Central Asia, dating from the 11th till 19th centuries. The Gur Amir Mausoleum (dated 1405) is a centre of the composition of a large architectural complex. The greatest conqueror of all times, Timur (Tamerlane), his sons Sharuh and Mironshakh, and his grandsons Beg and Muhammad Sultan are buried here.
Was known as a holiest city in Asia and had over 300 mosques and 80 madrassahs. Today Bukhara is the city with many historic monuments: the Arc, the Kalyan mosque and minaret (1127).
The original town covers less than 1 sq km and the 2,200 m of city wall encloses sixteen madrassahs. The Kunia Arc is a fortress of the 12th centuries. Pahlavan Mahmud mausoleum is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.
50 kilometres from Samarkand towards the Fan Mountains. Is a large city of the period of the Greek rule here. Here you can visit the urban complex - a monument of ancient Sogdiana, which has miraculously remained intact, and has been excavated by archeologists.
The capital of a past feudal domain Falgar, you will get a unique chance to become a quest of the inhabitants of this mountain village, to live at their homes, to attend a namez in the local mosque and to visit the mausoleum of an Iranian preacher of the 16th century. The local blacksmiths, potters and carpet-makers will show you their top professional skills, and the articles they make.
The Fan Mountauns
Form part of the Pamir-Alai and lie in 200 km east of Samarkand. The Fan Mountains are famous with more than ten peaks with a height of over 5000 metres, crystall clear lakes. The banks of the numerous lakes are covered with forests of relic archa-tree which can be found only here. Due to its fine climate, this area is very attractive for trekkers, hikers, climbers.
